Chengdu Attractions & Things to Do

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan and, at 21.5 million residents, one of China's ten largest cities. It sits on a flat river plain ringed by mountains, so the grey sky reads as geography, not weather. The metro reaches nearly everything below.

Is Chengdu Worth Visiting?

Yes, for a particular trip. The panda base holds more than 200 animals, and a morning there is the best thing most visitors do. The centre is compact and cheap: Kuanzhai Alley, People's Park and Jinli sit a few stops apart. For mountains, Chengdu is a starting point.

    1 hour

    12

    Jinsha Site Museum

    Half-day trip

The excavated Shu-era site where the gold Sun Bird disc was found.

    Stay
    2–3 hours

    Tickets
    Free
    Open
Open all day; market in the morning, bars after 20:00

    Stay

A stream down the middle, old banyans and a great deal of squid on sticks. Pleasant for three hours, not untouched as brochures imply.

  • Grey-brick gabled buildings lining the main street of Luodai Ancient Town
    17

    Luodai Ancient Town

    Half-day trip

A Hakka town of grey-brick lanes, a lake and a museum, 20 km east.

    Stay
    2–3 hours
    Metro

Mall 10:00–22:00; water park and rink ticketed separately
    Stay

  • An antelope statue on a rock plinth at the entrance to Chengdu Zoo
    20

    Chengdu Zoo

    Skip if you're rushed

A city zoo in the north-east with pandas, big cats and a reptile house.

    Tickets
CNY 20 (~US$3) · Children and students CNY 10; 60+ need no ticket
    Open
    8:00–17:30 (Mar–Oct); 8:30–17:30 (Nov–Feb)
    Stay
    2–3 hours
    Metro
    3 · Chengdu Zoo, Exit A

Pandas for CNY 20 is the trip's bargain, but the enclosures are old concrete and school groups fill the paths by ten.

Beyond the List

What Is Chengdu Famous For?

Getting Around Chengdu

The metro is the default: eighteen lines, fares CNY 2–13, a numbered exit at every station — the wrong one can leave you across a six-lane road. Pay by Alipay or single ticket. Didi's English interface saves saying an address out loud. Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU) are on Lines 18 and 10.

When to Visit

March to May and September to November are the comfortable months, highs of 17–27°C. Summer is hot and wet, 31°C, wettest in July and August. Winter is grey but rarely freezing, and quiet except at the panda base.
