Why this museum, out of all of them

Chengdu has plenty of specialist museums. This one is the city's own story, told chronologically across six floors: the Shu civilisation, the water-management works that made the plain farmable, the commercial city that printed paper money centuries before Europe, and the twentieth century. It is the single best preparation for everything else you will see, and it costs nothing.

The building itself sits on the west side of Tianfu Square, which puts it within walking distance of the metro interchange at the centre of the city and within two stops of Chunxi Road. If it rains — and in Chengdu it will — this is the correct plan for the afternoon.

How to do it without exhausting yourself

  1. 1

Book the slot, bring the original document

Reservation is online and real-name. Bring the passport or ID used for the booking — the gate checks the document itself, and a photograph of it may not be accepted.

  2. 2

Start at the top and work down

The upper floors hold the oldest material and are quietest early. Most visitors stop at the first two floors, so the top of the building is where you get space.

  3. 3

Give it ninety minutes, not four hours

Six floors of dense display is more than most people absorb. Pick two floors properly — the ancient city and the folk/puppetry collections are the two that repay attention.

  4. 4

    Use Friday or Saturday evening

The late opening to 20:30 is the least crowded window of the week and the one locals use. It is also the only slot that fits after a full day of sightseeing.
