Sichuan · routes with a night away
Multi-day trips from Chengdu
Chengdu is the rail hub for half of Sichuan. These are the three routes worth packing a bag for — sequenced so the travel happens at the right end of the day.

Why these three, and not six
Half of Sichuan is within a couple of hours of Chengdu by train, which tempts people into collecting destinations. The result is usually three days of stations and one good afternoon. These three routes are grouped by what genuinely needs a night away — not by what happens to be reachable in a day.
If you only have one free day, the single-day options still exist: Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng are 30 minutes from Xipu station, and Sanxingdui is an hour north. They appear here as legs of a two-day loop, because doing two of them properly beats racing back to Chengdu twice.
The three routes
- 01
Two days: Leshan, then Mount Emei
Train down in the morning, see the Buddha and eat in Leshan, continue to Emeishan station and sleep near Leidongping. Summit at dawn, descend through Wannian Temple, train back in the evening. This is the classic Sichuan two-day route for a reason.
- 02
Three days: Jiuzhaigou
1h39 by rail to Huanglongjiu, then a two-hour coach to the park gate. One full day inside the valley, one night either side. Entry closes at 14:00 and the park needs a full day, so two nights is the honest minimum.
- 03
Two days: Dujiangyan, Qingcheng, Sanxingdui
Day one west: the irrigation works in the morning, Qingcheng's Front Mountain in the afternoon, sleep in Dujiangyan town. Day two: train back through Chengdu and out to Guanghan North for Sanxingdui, which needs three to four hours and a reservation booked five days ahead.
Book in this order
- 1
1. The thing with a daily cap
Jiuzhaigou's park tickets and Sanxingdui's timed slots are the binding constraints — Jiuzhaigou caps at 41,000 in peak season, Sanxingdui sells online only, five days ahead at 20:00. Book those first.
- 2
2. The train
12306 releases tickets 15 days ahead, booked against your passport. Return legs on Sunday evenings from Leshan and Emeishan sell out before the outward ones.
- 3
3. The bed
Leidongping for Emei, the park gate for Jiuzhaigou, Dujiangyan town for the west loop. Sleeping at the mountain base is what turns a rushed day into a sunrise.
- 4
4. The timed bus, if there is one
Mount Emei's high-mountain buses are real-name and slot-timed, and the Golden Summit is capped at 8,000 a day while the cable car is rebuilt. That booking determines whether the whole route works.

Questions people actually ask
How many days do you need for a trip out of Chengdu?
Two days for Leshan with Mount Emei, or for the Dujiangyan–Qingcheng–Sanxingdui loop. Three days for Jiuzhaigou, because the park needs a full day and entry closes at 14:00.
Can you still do Leshan or Dujiangyan as a day trip?
Yes — both work in a single day from Chengdu. They are grouped into two-day routes here because combining them with the next sight beats travelling back to the city twice.
Which should you book first, the train or the attraction?
The attraction, when it has a daily cap or timed slots — Sanxingdui, Jiuzhaigou and Mount Emei's summit. Train tickets only open 15 days ahead, so they come second.
Do you need to speak Chinese for these routes?
No, but you need your passport: trains, park tickets and reservations are all real-name. Station names matter — Emeishan station serves the mountain, Emei station does not, and Sanxingdui station is not the museum station.
